Infamous PS3 Hacker, Geohot, Arrested (For Marijuana)

22-year-old hacker George "Geohot" Hotz, the man responsible for compromising the PlayStation 3's security and jailbreaking the original iPhone, has been arrested .... for pot chocolate. Mr. Geohot, a.k.a. "million75," a.k.a. "mil," a.k.a. "dream," a.k.a. "hax0r," was on his way to the SXSW conference in Austin when driving through Sierra Blanca, TX, a small Western town famous for one thing: a notoriously proficient local sheriff's department currently allied with a world-class drug-sniffing pooch patrol. Geohot was stopped, doggie noses did their thing, a cop spotted the pot, and the cuffs went click.

Geohot holds a medical marijuana license in California (for those pesky headaches, clearly) and as such, was legally allowed to tote around a confectionary treat bag of THC-infused sweets. Sadly for Geohot, as he may or may not have noticed, he wasn't in California when a sheriff pulled a 1/4 oz. of Mary Jane from the glove box, alongside a pack of chocolates said to contain less than 1/8 oz. of the same Wacky Tobacky.

As you may or may not know about being busted for Hippie Lettuce, the amount you have, and the value of said amount, matters when it comes punishment time. According to the report on Geohot's incident, there was apparently an argument about how to measure the cocoa component of his stash; the sheriff used the weight of the full treat for determining value ($800) while Geohot argued that it cost him a measly $15. While the outcome of that debate is still hazy, we do know Geohot was placed in jail on felony charges, then subsequently released on a $1,500 bail.

Before this most recent indiscretion, Geohot had actually gotten away with his tinkering on both the PS3 and iPhone, even after being taken to court by Sony. After that mess, he was offered a job at Google, and then accepted one at Facebook, where he reportedly worked until January of this year. This guy tangled with two of the largest hardware manufacturers in existence, only to be offered a job by two of the most popular websites in existence. Before this week, it seemed as though Mr. Geohot was on a bit of a Geo-hot-streak. Now, after all of that, he may become a felon for storing a legally-obtained chocolate ball made with $15 worth of weed in his glove box.
